<span style="background-color: white; color: #1d2933; font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; text-align: justify;"><b><span style="font-size: small;">R</span></b>ecently, I heard for what seemed like the umpteenth time from a distinguished NFL draft analyst that fumbling is a concern with former Georgia standout <b>Sony Michel</b> as the draft looms just days away.</span><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="background-color: white; font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: small;"><span style="color: #1d2933;"> <br />
“Ball security with Michel [is an issue], the fumbles,” the draft expert said. “He's got to clean that up.”<br />
<br />
Not necessarily doubting the analyst, I decided to explore the legitimacy of his claim—comparatively speaking, that is, as it relates to all Bulldog players who handled the football over an extended period of time—say, beginning in 2001, or when individual fumble statistics were first made available, via UGA, through last season.<br />
<br />
Accordingly, the expert’s assertion seems valid on the surface as Michel’s 12 fumbles during his Georgia career, five of which were lost, are tied for the most by a non-quarterback and tied for fourth overall among all Bulldog players (trailing quarterbacks Aaron Murray, who fumbled 20 times, David Greene, who had 17, and Matthew Stafford’s 14).</span></span><br />

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Of note, the name given is the name the player was most recognized for… For example, Georgia’s Buzy Rosenberg was always acknowledged as, well, Buzy Rosenberg—not Leman (his <i style="box-sizing: border-box;">real</i> first name) Rosenberg. Also, if I had a difficult time choosing one player over the other based solely on their names (e.g., Ben Zambiasi vs. Danny Verdun Wheeler at one of the linebacker spots), the deciding factor was their performance on the field. <span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Following a distinguished football career as a linebacker at Atlanta’s Therrell High School, <b>MAC McWHORTER</b> arrived at Georgia in the fall of 1969 as the eighth McWhorter to play for the Red and Black. He was promptly moved to offensive guard where he eventually twice earned academic all-conference (back when only 20-25 players annually received the honor), and was First Team All-SEC in 1973. <span style="color: #1d2933;"><span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">As you know, there’s been a lot of talk and buildup regarding Georgia’s trip to South Bend on September 9 to face the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame. Recently, a sports-talk radio host even went as far as saying the contest “as far as an intersectional opponent, is probably the most intriguing road trip ever for the Bulldogs.” Well, for those of you not from the “old school,” yes, Notre Dame is just that—“an intersectional opponent,” or essentially a foe from outside the Southeast. However, the “probably the most intriguing road trip ever for the Bulldogs” part is<span class="apple-converted-space"> </span><i style="box-sizing: border-box;">probably<span class="apple-converted-space"> </span></i>not accurate, at least in my opinion. Georgia not only sold its allotted 7,000 seats, but Bulldog fans even bought Arizona State home tickets to ensure themselves a spot. By kickoff, it was estimated that at least 16,000-17,000 spectators, and maybe as many as 20,000, in the 71,706-seat stadium were dressed in red and black. And, they witnessed a good showing from the visitors. Knowshon Moreno rushed for 149 yards, A.J. Green totaled 159 yards receiving, and together they were responsible for all three of third-ranked Georgia’s touchdowns in a 27-10 win. </span><b><span style="color: blue;"><a href="https://uga.rivals.com/news/uga-s-most-notable-intersectionals-" target="_blank">READ THE REST OF THE RANKINGS...</a></span></b></span></div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: verdana, sans-serif;">I was intrigued with the recent post on The Dawgvent started by @drdon50 regarding Georgia’s current ranking for the annual NACDA Directors’ Cup, whereby points are awarded to athletic programs based on their finish in polls/championship events. Stanford has won the cup for the last 20-something years in a row, which brings up a good point by @LawDawg86: Twenty sports are considered (10 men, 10 women) for the cup standings, yet Georgia participates in 18, meaning the school receives two “zeros.” The highly-ranked schools, like Stanford, compete in more than 20 sports, often excelling in country club athletics, Olympic sports, and the more obscure.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"><br />
</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">“Not defending the AD, just pointing out all the facts,” LawDawg86 concluded. In agreement—not defending or attacking Greg McGarity—I wanted to discover the facts regarding the NACDA Directors’ Cup standings and how Georgia performed during the tenures of its last three athletic directors.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"><br />
</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">The standings began being released annually with the 1993-94 academic year and have continued over the last 23 years: 11 years under AD Vince Dooley (1993-94 through 2003-04), six years under AD Damon Evans (2004-05 through 2009-10), and six years under AD McGarity (2010-11 through 2015-16). As mentioned, since schools compete in a varying number of sports, I decided to consider only the Southeastern Conference, and just the 12 schools which have been members for the duration of the time being measured (1993-94 to present), because schools in the SEC more or less/nearly compete in the same sports.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"><br />
</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">For the final 11 years Vince Dooley was athletic director, Georgia’s average national ranking in the Directors’ Cup was No. 11½, while the Bulldogs had a 2.6 average finish of the 12 SEC teams at the time. Their average point total was good for a solid second-place finish in the conference, trailing top-ranked Florida by an average of 117.7 points... <a href="https://uga.rivals.com/news/steady-slipping-in-the-cup-standings" target="_blank"><b><span style="color: blue;">TO READ REST AND VIEW TABLES.</span></b></a></span></div>

Beginning in the 1930s, the racing spectacle has been as much as a social function as it is a sporting event and, at one time, was billed by the press as “The World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party.” From what I discovered, the moniker was used routinely by the media for The Carolina Cup beginning in the mid-1960s, or just before the press started commonly using the label for Georgia-Florida. It was also during the mid-1960s that the event was recognized as having been “The World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party” for “many years.” During the 1970s, or when the use of “The World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party” had become widespread in Jacksonville, the use of the title for the event in Camden dwindled as the state of South Carolina increased activity in enforcing liquor laws.</span></span></div>

Instead, during a dreary day 35 years ago--so dreary that planes could not fly into Oxford--Georgia and Ole Miss featured the killing of wasps and spilled Coke in the broadcast booth and, on the gridiron, one of his best collegiate performances by the legendary Herschel Walker (and, the greatest 6-yard run in the history of the sport), resulting in a 30-point blowout by the Bulldogs over their host:</span></span></div>

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Rest In Peace, Mr. Kimsey. </span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">A couple of days ago, CLIFF KIMSEY, Georgia's oldest living football letterman, died at his home in Cornelia, Ga., at the age of 94.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">A few years ago, I had the honor of interviewing Mr. Kimsey from his home, primarily in regards to his memories of the Bulldogs’ 21-19 win over Georgia Tech in 1941—what he considered the “game of his life”—which earned Georgia a spot in the Orange Bowl. A lasting memory of mine from that interview was more so than the extraordinary game he played against the Jackets was, simply, how proud Mr. Kimsey was to have been a part of defeating rival Georgia Tech—and, Mr. Kimsey absolutely loved it when Georgia beat Tech.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">It all started in August of 1938, when Mr. Kimsey was hoping to earn a scholarship to attend and play football in college. Georgia Tech’s head coach, Bill Alexander, was coaching the South team in the state’s GACA North-South All-Star Game. Mr. Kimsey was playing for the North coached by UGA’s head coach, Joel Hunt. D</span><span style="font-family: verdana, sans-serif;">uring a week of practice leading up to the game, o</span><span style="font-family: verdana, sans-serif;">ut of the blue, Alexander approached Mr. Kimsey, who had recently turned 17 years old. The Tech coach informed the youngster that he would actually be a better fit for the Jackets’ backfield than the boy he was recruiting at the time. But, Alexander then curiously added, “You can’t make it at Tech!” </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Mr. Kimsey told me, “Now, I’m not sure if he meant I couldn’t make it academically or football-wise, but either way, it looked like I wasn’t going to Tech.”</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">In what was the first annual high school all-star football game in the state, the North defeated the South 25-6 in front of 6,000 spectators at Tech’s Grant Field. Much to Hunt’s delight, and Alexander’s chagrin, Mr. Kimsey was recognized as a “star” in the North’s victory, scoring a touchdown in the third quarter.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">“And, beginning with that all-star game,” Mr. Kimsey informed me with a chuckle, “I’ve always been happy to beat Tech.” </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span lang="EN" style="letter-spacing: 0.25pt;"><span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">In closing my interview with Mr. Kimsey, I referred to the Bulldogs’ recent dominance over the Yellow Jackets in football. “I’ve really enjoyed it,” he stated. “And, <i>any</i> win over Tech is a <i>good</i> win!”</span><o:p></o:p></span></div>
